A Little Red

Tomorrow is release day for A Little Red, book 1 of my newest series - The 3 Colors Trilogy.  I'm trying several new things with this series. While I've written fantasy before, I've never tried my hand at paranormal romance.  I'm also using a quick release strategy and putting out the entire trilogy within 3 months so that everyone can binge on the completed series like Netflix.  And I'm using a low release week price (¢.99!!). With the new genre and the non-traditional sales strategies I have to admit that I'm nervous for tomorrow.

Those nerves have been a bit mitigated by the early reviews.  Whether or not the series is a sales success remains to be seen, but at least the Advance Readers are thoroughly enjoying the story.

The series is a fun, angsty romance trilogy with a trio of siblings as they meet and fall in love with shifter wolves. There are bad guy warlocks, good girl witches, and a few more magical beings roaming around because if I'm going paranormal I'm not stopping with wolves. The fun part about writing this series was trying to establish how each creature and species would interact with our modern world. Of course it also meant debating the proper system of capitalization of supernatural creatures and whether or not wolves liked blueberries.  Although, on the blueberries, I'm completely backed up by science - they do. A Little Red is, of course,  inspired by Little Red Riding Hood and even includes a grandma (don't worry, she lives).  Bringing Little Red and her wolf together was enormously fun, and I'm happy to report that this fairy tale comes complete with a Happily Ever After.  I really enjoyed writing these tales of love, magic, and good vs. evil and I hope readers will enjoy taking the journey with me.  Here's a quick little blurb, to find out more, try the links below.

3 Colors Trilogy Launches!

For a little over a year, I've been feverishly working on the series of books that would become the 3 Colors Trilogy.  These action-packed paranormal romances feature a trio of siblings Azure, Ochre, and Scarlet as they find love and face danger from evil warlocks. While not traditional mysteries in the sense that no one is trying to solve a murder - each book finds the romantic leads trying to puzzle out out who is targeting them and why.  These quick steamy reads are the most fun I've had writing in a long time. The couples are swoon-worthy, funny, and who doesn't love werewolves?

How to Write the Heming...Way

One part of writing this series that has been interesting has been working with a beta reading service. Because this isn't my usual genre, I used a service to supply beta readers I didn't know to read the initial completed manuscript. The readers then answered a short survey of questions that I provided.  It was amazingly insightful, but also nerve wracking! Handing over a partially edited book to a stranger for feedback... whew! The first time, my nerves were tested and I may have had to Hemingway (aka drink!) my way through the first reading of their responses. But the were all quite kind to me and provided many useful data points.

Let me introduce you to one of our newer blogmates, Lynn McPherson. For years, Lynn led an adventurous globe-trotting life (her adventures sound like so much fun!). Now she  channels her love of adventure and history into her writing, where she's free to go anywhere, anytime. Currently juggling family and an energetic puppy, she writes the Izzy Walsh Mystery Series.

CATHY: What made you pick your particular mystery genre?

LYNN: I've loved cozy mysteries since I read my first one, Rita Mae Brown's classic Mrs. Murphy series. She had me at the title, Whisker of Evil. When I started writing, it was the natural choice.

CATHY: Which came first: plot, character, or setting?

LYNN: Usually plot comes first for me. It won't be completely fleshed out until I have my characters and setting, but the inkling of an idea is what gets the ball rolling.  

CATHY: I’m seeing more novels set in the 1950s. What led you to choose this time period for your books?

LYNN: I'm a big fan of I Love Lucy. My books aim to provide the same sort of humor with the added element of a murder mystery. It's all about fun. 

CATHY: Do you ever hit the wall or find you’ve written yourself into a corner? How do you turn that around?

LYNN: I have most definitely written myself into a corner. Stumped, I usually skip ahead and write a scene I'm more confident about. I can always go back to where I left off once I've figured out what to do and how to fix it.

CATHY: The opportunity to go on a surprise vacation arises. You have 90 minutes to pack and get to the airport. Where will you go and what will you pack?

LYNN: I love Thailand and have been daydreaming of the many months I spent there, years ago. I always do carry-on so I won't bring much. Some basic toiletries, sun dresses, and flip flops are all I require!

CATHY: What do you read when you aren’t writing? Any favorite authors (or snacks/beverages) to go with it?

LYNN: My go-to favorites are Vicky Delany, Elizabeth J Duncan, and Vivien Chien. At the moment I'm reading Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto. It's a hoot! When I'm reading I like to sip on tea--lemon ginger or green tea are normally brewing in the pot.

Do Contests Matter?

Should the winner medal from the Killer Nashville Claymore Award contest go on the cover of The Body in the Beaver Pond? That was one of the many questions my cover artist and I discussed as I prepared for the release of the novel. 

As Dar and I chatted, I wondered, do writing contest even matter?

Authors know how competitive the contests are, but do readers care? Let me know what you think in the comments.

Of course, there are the other reasons authors (or their publicists) enter. Little secret – we’re incredibly insecure! Think about it. We’re putting ourselves “out there” for the world to critique. We’re sharing pieces of the deepest parts of us. And we worry all the time that maybe our books are actually terrible and any previous “success” was a fluke. Maybe a contest offers a tiny bit of affirmation, that says, Yeah. This is good.

Then again, that may be more than most readers need or want to know.

While I’ve had a great time writing this novel and look forward to the release, I decided to add a layer to my usual low key launch plans. I decided to make the release about all of you.

Nearly everyone knows friends or family who’ve lost loved ones, jobs, nearly lost their home, and faced a host of other challenges this year.

The Body in the Beaver Pond touches on many of these challenges, offering a tangible (if somewhat snarky) perspective from Keri, as she struggles to adjust after loosing her marriage, home and job. (And for an extra writing challenge – the book is funny!)

Now that I have a funny main character I hope people relate to, I need a place to make all this happen. (Imaginary) Liberty Falls is drawn from a number of small towns in Washington state’s Cascade Mountains. Lingering economic inequities, the pandemic, life throwing curve balls – all this hurt many people, especially in these smaller, rural areas where social services are few and far between. As a result, I’m donating the royalties from presales (and the first few months of sales) from The Body in the Beaver Pond to HopeSource, a multi-purpose agency, which serves Kittitas County (the first county you discover when you venture over Snoqualmie Pass from Seattle.)

Usually when an author releases a new book, it’s nerves and excitement and a ton of planning and nerves…

Did I mention it can be nerve-wracking? Will people like the book I spent however many months writing? Will they “get” the characters, the theme…

Will they hate it?

Will my publisher look at the numbers and tell me to go away?

Malbec Mayhem is nerve-wracking for me because it’s a little different. It’s a novella, revolving around one of the secondary characters in the Holly Price series. Alex had been bugging me for ages to give him a second chance—and this story is his opportunity to grow up and get things right. The mystery takes a back seat to the grown up version of coming of age.

New Things

I once had a cousin/uncle/grandparent-ish person (he was my second cousin once-removed if you want to get technical here, but the point is that he was in his eighties and I was around ten, you get the idea) who once posed the question that I probably wasn't supposed to hear - what's the difference between naked and nekkid?  Naked is simply having no clothes on.  Nekkid is naked, but with intent.  In other words, the difference is subtle and mostly to do with what you intend to do about it.  Which is how I feel about old and vintage.  

My general preference, when given a choice, is for old things.  Which is to say I like old books, old furniture, old clothes and my grumpy old dog.  Although, usually I say vintage, which is the same as old, but with character.  I don't want new things (unless they're electronics and sometimes not even then).  I want the things I've become accustomed to and work for me.  Which is why sometimes, even when something gets actually too old to use, I still hang on to it.  Recently, my favorite skull-n-crossbones mug developed an unfortunate hairline crack that resulted in it weeping tea over everything.  It was unusable but I hung on to it for two weeks.  What was I planning on doing with this mug?  It wasn't fixable.  It wasn't art.  Did I think it would magically heal itself?  It wasn't until I had resigned myself to it's passing that I was able to let it depart into the recycling bin.

I don't think my preference for the old and familiar is particularly unusual.  I think most of us are little grumpy about being forced into new things.  We're uncomfortable with being uncomfortable.  On the other hand, studies seem to indicate that actively being in a place of uncertainty and learning keeps Alzheimer's at bay.  Being used to a little discomfort makes us appreciate what we have and have grace for those who also in discomfort. And I think that if a few more people were used to being told no and being a little more uncomfortable then they wouldn't lose their cool and have public temper-tantrums in the middle of Target (why is it always Target?).  Perhaps we need new things periodically just to remind us that sometimes we don't always get to keep our favorite mug.  And sometimes we need a new mug to tell us that everything will be OK.  As long as it looks vintage.

Top Ten Writing Tips

I can’t believe it’s already the middle of July! This year seems never ending--and conversely to be evaporating in an endless blur.

Remember an eternity ago (ie pre-pandemic) when you made New Year's Resolutions? How are you coming with yours? 

One of my resolutions (the only one I actually remember and am still attempting) was to transfer the organization I always implemented in my day job to my writing life. Since my writing space and habits were a bit (cough, a lot) disorganized, I got together with some author friends. What quickly evolved was a set of writing tips. Many of these I’ve done without conscious thought. I’m attempting to be more mindful, however, and plan to use this structure as additional motivation to, as one friend puts it, finish the damn book.

Yes, as the launch activity for Calling for the Money wraps up (see below) I'm back at work on another story.

So, without further fanfare – the writing tips:

Ten – Make lists. Every day I make a list of the things I want to accomplish that day. (I’m not sure what it says about me that I love drawing a line through an item when it’s done.) The first line (every day but Sunday) is always, Write. Long-term-goals are listed on my white board: things I want to be sure I don’t forget, but I don’t have to do today.

Nine – Sprint.  A group of us grabs our first, or next, cup of coffee and checks in, then we all ignore each other, turn off the internet and the phone, and work steadily for an hour. It’s a writing club, a mutual support group, and a fabulous technique for working without interruption. I write until I meet my word count goal for the day. (Thank Steven King for this one.)

Eight – Work on one series at a time. I try my best to immerse myself in one setting, one set of characters, one story, whether I’m working on a first draft or revising a draft. Avoiding the “new shiny” keeps me focused.

Seven – Finish what’s due first. Except #8 blows up sometimes. I’ll be in first draft mode on Pony Ring and edits will come in from Beaver Pond. Then there was all the activity around the launch of Calling for the Money. Whew! I operate on the First Due principle. I knock out the edits, because they’re due in a week or two, then get back to the longer work. The problem with doing that, of course, is getting back up to speed with the work-in-process, so I can re-immerse myself in that world.

Six – Take time away from the desk. By the end of a writing session, my creative brain is mush. I usually go for what I call my plotting walk, especially if I’m writing a first draft. There’s something about the rhythm of walking that brings the next scene or a plot problem into focus. It makes the dogs happy to get out of the house, too.

Five – Separate creative time from admin time. I’m most creative in the early morning, so I do my writing then. A corollary is, Keep creative time sacred. I don’t schedule anything else for mornings. I try to keep writing blog posts, scheduling author events, record-keeping, and all the other business stuff for the evenings.

Four – Work ahead. Know what you want to accomplish. I’ve written my goals for the year and set up a time table to implement them. That means I work now on upcoming items instead of waiting and scrambling at the last minute.

Three – Outsource what I can’t do. While I tinker with art and photo-editing, I know my limits with graphic design. I hire a wonderful cover artist. I like formatting my books, but it’s something I can do in the evening while my husband watches TV. The key point is identifying what I’m good at and enjoy, versus what I can outsource. Why waste time on things it would take me forever to do and rob me of the hours I need to do what I’m good at – writing stories?

Two – Stay healthy. I always have a full flask of water on my desk. Fluids in, fluids out. It makes me get up and move around every hour or so. And if I forget, my Fitbit buzzes at me with a reminder. I try to eat lean fresh foods, and I get regular exercise even if it isn’t always a sweaty gym workout. And the exercise doubles as creative time – see #6!

One – Butt in the chair, fingers on the keyboard. This is really the most important one. If I get distracted, schedule other things, or simply don’t do the writing, then…I’m not doing the writing. And that’s my job. Of all the varied jobs I’ve held, I’m lucky and blessed to have this one I love.
