Guilty Pleasures

I’m really not a big TV watcher. But when I'm down, or just need to relax, or when I'm a little stuck on my WIP, I do turn to what I call my comfort shows. There are a few of them.

Supernatural is one of my top favorites.

Once in a while I watch Southland.

Love Love Love Project Runway.

But these are all done, and now so is American Idol.

Last night Lee DeWyze won and all is good in Idol world.

I’ve written about Friday Night Lights--my other TV love.

(and it’s on NBC again so I can see the whole season!) Yes!!

But I really love another show.

Raise your hand if you’re a Glee fan. Go ahead, all the way up.

Things I love about Glee:

  • The singing--of course!
  • The head-on approach it takes with toughissues like not blending in or being true to who you are.
  • The homage to pop culture.
  • A whole show paying tribute to Madonna.
  • Special Guest star Olivia Newton John.
  • Sue and the Cheerios.
  • Gaga day.
  • The melodrama. It’s over the top and God how I love it!
  • Kristen Chenowith.
  • Kurt and Finn trying to be almost brothers.
  • The angst.
  • The emotion.
  • The truth underneath the theatricality.
  • The cheerio, Brittany, who said, “Did you know Dolphins are just gay sharks?”

There’s so much to love about Glee. It’s a guilty pleasure... and one I’m not afraid to admit.

So here’s my question:

What’s your guilty pleasure?

  1. My guilty pleasure is I love TV and I'm not afraid to admit that.

I just discovered Glee and I can't believe I missed a whole season. Yes, I have the first season in my Netflix queue.

  2. Coffee...lots of coffee!! I watch a couple reality tv shows, but really don't have time to keep up with more than one or two per season.

  3. Dru, I'm with you. I missed the first 1/2 of the first season! Then I played catch up--sort of--on the internet. I'm so glad I did. I LOVE it.

ENJOY! You're in for a treat.

  4. White Castle! White Castle! White Castle!

Don't you use TV as white noise to go with your White Castle, Tonya?

  5. West Wing re-runs--I'm almost tired of that show, but not quite and I always feel badly about spending time watching something I've SEEN several times before. Same goes for Frasier or any movie I keep watching over and over (tell myself those are work-related research!).

Mad Men--really, nothing much to feel guilty about there, it's very good, but my husband doesn't like it and gives me an indulgent "why do you watch this crap" look and I feel guilty that our TV is tuned to it when he's in the room.

And, this one embarrasses me most: some episodes of Sex and the City. This truly was/is a show I love to hate and the contradiction bothers me! The winner in this category used to be any of the "Real Housewives" shows (everyone turn and look at Maggie right now), but I've given those up because they are just too emotionally whorish for me.

  6. I love reality tv. There! I said it. (I think I've said it before.) I never miss an episode of Real Housewives. I was really into LOST this season but am extremely disappointed by the ending.

Other guilty pleasures include pretzels (when you eat an entire 1 lb bag during the day, they are certainly a guilty pleasure) and the occasional cosmo. Maggie

  7. Maggie, I'm with you about the "Real Housewives," although I don't watch New Jersey (and I don't intentionally watch Atlanta, just catch some of the re-runs when I'm flipping around). But I'm drawn to "Real Housewives of NYC" in particular like a rubbernecker to a car wreck. For the most part, those women are just AWFUL, and it makes me glad not to be one of them. But I can't stop watching. Although maybe once Bethenny leaves, I'll just switch to her new show, because I won't be able to tolerate Jill, the Countess, and Bat-s**t Crazy Barbie (aka Kelly) without some kind of balance there. Oh, have you read the, er, very creative summaries of each show on Gawker.com? They have me splitting my sides laughing!

Misa, you and my hubby with those White Castles!!! I even buy him the frozen cheeseburgers because he's addicted! And we live just blocks from an actual WC, so you know he has it bad!

  9. I prefer the crim and drama shows I never watched any of those shows you listed. Partly because I work evenings 3-11pm central. But I always preferred NCIS, Law & Order, The Closer, CSI or other shows along those lines. I often think we are the only people that don't watch all the contest shows. They just don't appeal to me is all.
When I'm writing and I get stuck I play a game. I will pull up SPider Solitaire or Free Cell. Online I play spades I'm a member of several leagues I have buddies in them and friends as well. SO I guess I have a different escape outlet.
Funny I've read a lot lately about what a solitary profession writing is and I think I need it though after working with the public 40 hours a week in a convenience store. No worry of being solitary there. Even when you work overnight by yourself there are people in and out all night. I enjoy getting away to write lol.

  12. I've heard so many great things about The Closer that I bought season 1 to watch as I work through my summer LIST OF THINGS TO DO which is about as long as my arm, so not sure I'll actually ever make it through season 1, but I'm ready to try!

    Thanks for sharing everyone!
