A Vacation From Guilt

A Vacation From Guilt
By Laura Bradford

For as far back as I can remember, I've been writing book after book with little to no break. Sure, we've taken some family vacations (fun ones!), and there have been days I didn't write like I was supposed to thanks to kids' schedules/needs, an unexpected snafu, and, sometimes a lack of any discernible motivation on my part. On those non-vacation days when I didn't write, there was always a cloud of guilt hanging over my every move.

I should be writing...

I'm going to have to do double the word count tomorrow...

I have a deadline looming...

You know the guilt I'm talking about. Which means you also know how guilt can take the bloom off your fun.

So, for the first time in a very long time, I'm going to take 10 whole days off. I don't have anything in particular planned, I just know that guilt over not writing won't be part of whatever I do.

~I may have a movie day (complete with a blanket and every one of my favorite chick flicks)...

~I think it's highly likely many hours will be spent reading (can't wait)...

~I'm envisioning a city-day with a Belgian waffle and a Belgian Hot Cocoa at my favorite breakfast place on West 72nd followed by a front row "seat" to the Sea Lion Feeding at the Central Park Zoo...

~I may meet a friend for lunch or dinner...

~And I may pick my daughter up at school after classes and take her out for frozen yogurt...

The options are endless and oh so wonderful to imagine.

So how about you? If you could take a week off just because, what would you do?

~Laura

  1. I do a no guilt Sunday. If I haven't made my weekly goals, and I don't want to write, I don't. Now deadline time is a little different, but mostly, I've learned to be good to myself at least for one day.

Have fun on your vaca! Or Stay-ca....

  2. Thanks, Lynn. I just typed "The End" about five minutes ago. So, come Monday, I switch to revising and editing. Then...once that's done and I've officially sent it on to my editor, my stay-ca starts!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. I would do absolutely nothing that needed to be done.
