In this regard, NaNo is an analogy for life! :-)

RachelRachel Bradyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10543659454210547858noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1025201337316610324.post-9952742374459847792009-12-01T18:48:19.849-05:002009-12-01T18:48:19.849-05:00Is the NaNoWriMo premise advertising anything more...Is the NaNoWriMo premise advertising anything more than getting a draft together? I don't see it if they are. And who decides what is a novel or not? Being published? I'm sure plenty of us have read books where we thought it could have used a revision or two more.

I think you get out of it what you put into it, and I don't think most people see it as any kind of false gambit. I'm not much of a joiner on things, but I still enjoyed it. I enjoyed challenging myself, and I enjoyed finding what I was capable of.

I think if a person comes out of it feeling good about what they accomplished, then it's awesome. Whether they wrote 10K or 50k words. And the organization seems bent on raising money for some good programs. That's fantastic.

Thanks for the post, Rachel!Chrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10070278104646895235noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1025201337316610324.post-27998392828606704722009-11-30T10:44:18.954-05:002009-11-30T10:44:18.954-05:00To M. and Bethany, congrats on your 50,000 word co...To M. and Bethany, congrats on your 50,000 word coup this year!

Misa, I kinda gave up on it too. Lost my momentum a week ago and picked another room in my house to paint!

Vicky, now that I know how freeing it is, I think I could duplicate my experimental writing month again, any time of year. For my first time out, it was helpful to do it under the NaNoWriMo umbrella because I saw so many other online posts from others trying the same thing. Maybe a strength in numbers thing. Or just some online support. Misery loves company? :-)

Thanks for commenting, guys.Rachel Bradyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10543659454210547858noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1025201337316610324.post-25688382190614608612009-11-30T10:02:45.151-05:002009-11-30T10:02:45.151-05:00I'm one of the people who have disdain for thi...I'm one of the people who have disdain for this novel-in-30-days gambit.

When you start tossing around phrases about lowering standards and compromising goals, etc., it's no good.

That said, I think if the advertised premise were different and really more truthful, one of 30 days in which you draft a solid and full story outline to get yourself going and really just free up your methods and brain a bit, I could buy into it more. Honestly, that seems to be the less public and more realistic face of the whole NaNoWriMo scheme. But, the sound-bite is "write a novel in a month" and that's sort of a lie and it's dismissive of what writing a good novel or story of any medium really takes.

And, couldn't any writer looking to free up their process a bit do exactly what Rachel Brady did without the umbrella of NaNoWriMo?Vicky Politonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1025201337316610324.post-22515449006981775762009-11-30T08:49:09.133-05:002009-11-30T08:49:09.133-05:00This is awesome.
