Last spring, we had a tornado warning, and as I stood by the sink washing dishes, I noticed a pile of leaves in my back yard swirling in a circle mid-air. A strong wind came through, but interestingly, our little block with its five old houses, was unscathed. When I dropped my son's friend off at his house an hour later--and just a block away--the devastation was incredible: trees upended and in people's living rooms, cars crushed, branches everywhere. I couldn't believe that only a short distance away was such destruction, while our street looked exactly the same. Very strange.
