Confessions of a non-chocoholic

Hello. My name is Joelle and I am not addicted to chocolate.

There. I said it. And even as I admit my lukewarm feelings about chocolate, I feel as if I should hang my head in shame. Why? Well, almost all my female friends adore chocolate. They can’t get enough of the stuff. Whether they need comfort, are celebrating a great event, are having a sexy night with their significant other or a ratty robe night in front of the television—chocolate factors into their day.

Me…not so much. That’s not to say I dislike chocolate. I think chocolate is a wonderful thing. Especially dark chocolate. But after one piece, I can push away the box and be satisfied. Something none of my friends understand.

Sigh. I guess it is no surprise that in the chocolate category of life I march to the beat of my own drummer. Heck, that seems to be the case in just about every other avenue of my life. I went to college for musical theater and grad school for opera performance. Being an honors student, I didn’t have to take general education classes at my college. So, my days were filled with music theory, voice lessons, acting classes and dance. Woot! Not a single English class in the mix. So naturally, as I march along to my own little drummer I end up writing books and becoming an author.

Yeah – I’m not exactly the type to do the typical. Whether it be in my food indulgence preference (Skittles and Starburst Sour Jelly Beans all the way) or in my entertainment choices—can you say Baseball, Basketball, Football anyone?—I tend to go against the grain of the women I hang around with.

But that’s okay because it means I’m…well…me. It also means that my friends love when I come over because after I eat one piece of chocolate the rest belongs to them.

Since they say confession is good for the soul - here is your chance to feel good with me! What things do all of your friends love that you have luke warm feelings about?

  2. Most of my friends are outgoing, social butterflies where I like to sit quiet in a corner observing all those around me and still feel like I'm in a crowd.

  3. Manicures and pedicures. Don't believe the hype.

  4. Joelle,

I'm afraid I'll be booted from the female gender for admitting this but...I don't like to shop.

    There, I said it.

  5. I'm an oddity in that I don't like sweets, makeup, shopping and shoes! Absolutely hate shoes - it's barefoot all the way for me.

  6. I have to join Laura and Karen in admitting I'm not much of a shopper either...and no makeup is the way to go! If the cosmetic companies depended on women like me, they'd go bankrupt. I do love chocolate but in moderation (and especially when it's on fruit, like bananas and strawberries). Joelle, I think there are lots of us who love sports! My hubby has turned me into a hockey fanatic, and I love college basketball (I'm rooting for my Jayhawks in the Final Four!). I used to watch football every Sunday, but I haven't done that in a while. Hmm, my friends are all pretty eclectic, which is great, 'cause that way I never feel like I'm an oddball. I think we're all oddballs but in the nicest way. :-)

  7. I love shoes - they're so shiny and pretty - but I only want to wear them for about... 20 minutes. ;) It takes all kinds of instruments to make a great band - let's keep on marching to whatever drummer takes our fancy!

  8. I'm always a bit bashful about admitting that I don't care for chocolate, either. I get a lot of odd, disbelieving looks when I say this. The only chocolate I even think tastes good is Lindt chili chocolate. Other than that, bleh.
In my defense, however, I am prone to migraines and there seems to be a link between chocolate and these headaches, so maybe it's my body's self-defense mechanism.
    fun post, Joelle.
    xoxo

  9. I feel tge same way about chocolate; one piece about once a month & I'm good.
I hate shopping. I prefer being barefoot or in cheap flip flops. My friends are at concerts or movies or watching TV & I'm running or hiking or biking, at the dojo, writing, or reading. I don't eat meat, including bacon. My makeup regimin involves tinted moisturizer (with sunscreen), mascara, & lip gloss. But I cook a damn fine camp meal (still meatless).
We are who we are & that's A-okay.

  10. No chocolate here. I don't actually think I'd be addicted to it even if I wasn't slightly allergic. I've never been a big fan of it, even when I was a kid. People look at me like I'm nuts, or worse, in horror when I mention that I can only have a limited amount.

  11. My idea of camping is in a hotel with a pool and a spa where I can stop in for a pedicure... my idea of shopping is not about trying on a bunch of clothes I have no intention of buying, but rather window shopping, just wandering around until something shouts at me. I don't wear a lot of make-up. I love chocolate and bacon, and I totally adore cupcakes. I'm really not a sports fan, but LOVE baseball- especially while eating hotdogs in the stadium.

My life would be boring if all of my friends loved all the same things. I've been inspired to camp and hike thanks to my friend, Neliza. I want to run a 5k thanks to my friend, Holly. And I want to spend more time being me thanks to my friend, Joelle. And spend more time learning about me thanks to my friend, Kari. Did you know I can't watch scary movies? The last scary movie I watched was in 1997... I feel silly saying it, but my friends love me regarless.

  12. I like movies where stuff blows up and people hit each other really, really hard.

    *phew* I feel better now.

  13. Not like chocolate? Well that's why there's vanilla. I am a chocoholic, too, but I really love berries--berry pie, strawberry shortcake, and.... there doesn't have to be any chocolate! That's a real confession for me. I'm with the other folks on shopping. I love a good flea market, but clothes. Not my thing. That's what LL Bean is for!

  14. TV and shopping, and TV shopping is an inconceivable combination.

  15. I love chocolate. I don't like to shop at all. If I can't find what I want immediately, I leave the store. Isn't it great that we're all so different?
