Many thanks to Susan and everyone here at The Stiletto Gang for inviting me for a visit!! It’s wonderful to be back with you all!
Today is the release day for my third women's fiction book from Kensington, A Summer in Europe, and I’m SO excited about it! To celebrate, I’ve been taking a journey around the web…and talking about some of my favorite European sites, specifically the ones that appear in the story. I thought I’d share a few personal memories of places I loved. Places that left their mark, not only on my heart and soul, but also inspired my writing. This novel is about a character named Gwendolyn Reese, who gets a month-long tour through Europe as a 30th birthday gift from her eccentric Aunt Bea and her aunt's Sudoku-and-Mahjongg Club. She's hesitant to leave Iowa and her insurance-agent boyfriend behind for the summer, but she's never had an adventure overseas before and is soon convinced to go. Before long, she finds herself in Italy, and the adventure begins!
One of the places in the book that became the site of a turning-point scene for Gwen was her visit to the gorgeous Isle of Capri. It was a place I’d heard about only vaguely until my husband and I went there as part of a tour of Italy when I was about 24. Like my character, I only spent a day on the island, but the beauty of the place stayed with me. Even now…almost 20 years later.
The first thing about Capri that jumped out at me was the brightly colored flowers. There was a Southern gentleman on the tour with us who knew about gardening in a way I most certainly did not (I’ve got the two biggest black thumbs in the Midwest, LOL), and he told me that they were called “Bougainvillea.” Until then, I’d never heard of these plants, but they became my immediate favorites. So unbelievably vibrant! (My husband took this shot of the Bougainvillea-lined walking path -- isn’t it lovely?)
But it wasn’t just the flora that struck me as amazing. It was the fact that, while the island was covered with so much beauty, the sea around the island was equally stunning. Capri is just a short ferry ride from the coastal Italian city of Sorrento, and the waters are warm and semi-tropical, especially in summer. Tourists would line up to visit the Blue Grotto, a sea cave and admire the incredibly blue water inside of it, thanks to a lovely trick of the light.
Another memorable thing about the island was all the walking paths. Many were not as seemingly level as the one in my husband’s photo. There were quite a few steep slopes and staircases, which gave us a good cardio workout while we were there! Despite the physical exertion, however, we would have loved to have stayed longer, if we could have afforded it. As it was, though, the day trip was very memorable and, in picturing my character there, I got to imagine myself running down the staircases, gazing out at the beautiful water and breathing in the Bougainvillea-scented air, too.And aren’t moments like that one of the many joys of being a writer?!

And if you'd like to read an excerpt from A Summer in Europe, which is a Literary Guild and Rhapsody Book Club featured alternate selection for December 2011, you can find one here: http://www.marilynbrant.com/MBbooksEURO.html "Brant's newest...distinguishes itself with a charismatic leading man and very funny supporting cast, especially the wonderful elderly characters with their resonant message about living life to the fullest." ~Publishers Weekly
"Brant's charming and engaging tale will allow readers to immerse themselves in the magic and beauty of Europe along with the characters. Although the descriptions of the scenery are amazing, the development of the characters and their unique personalities are what really make this novel shine. What an enjoyable escape!" ~Romantic Times
Do you have a favorite flowering plant? Have you ever been to place far from home and encountered some particularly beautiful vegetation? I’d love to hear about it. And if you’ve ever visited Italy or the Isle of Capri, I’d love to hear about that, too!

My favorite cut flower is Fresia. (Maggie will remember Eben, an old colleague/boss in back when we worked at the same publishing house, and he gave me those for a birthday one day and I'd never seen them and they smelled like a very special kind of rose.) I love Geraniums, too. Their foliage smells so spicy-nice.
ReplyDeleteMy younger sister lived in the Marianas Islands years ago, on Saipan, and I visited once (amazing reefs and beaches) and saw ther "Flame Trees" in flower--amazing.
Lastly, I can't hear the phrase Isle of Capri without thinking of Madame Mona Houston, a wonderful and legendary, and at the time 50-something, French professor at Indiana University, my alma, who on being complimented on a cute little floral short skirt she was wearing did a little twirl and trilled "why thank you, my dear, I got it on the Isle of Capri!". So hilariously sweet.
*waving to all*

Everyone -- I have to run out for a little while this morning, but I'll be back so I can respond to everybody else personally!! Loved reading your comments so far! See you all soon :).
Happy release day Marilyn! Yay! So exciting!
ReplyDeleteI was on the Isle of Capri when I was 16. I just pulled out my photo album, which I haven't done in years, to look at the pics of the Blue Grotto. That was incredible. Breathtaking. Would be an awesome setting in a book. Traveling with you on your European itinerary is motivating me to get going on writing my Ireland book. My goal for 2012.
I remember being surprised at all the beautiful flowers and vegetation in Singapore. They have some gorgeous gardens. But unless the flowers are daisies, tulips, or roses, I can't identify them. I'm awful when it comes to flowers.
Can't wait for our next stop on the itinerary!
Ruth, thanks for your message!
ReplyDeletegirlygirlhoosier, I'm thrilled you're enjoying the tour! It's easy to get a good picture in a place this beautiful :).
ndbh39, I really hope you'll like it! I did try to describe the sites as well as I could -- there are just so many lovely places in Europe...
Vicky, oh, you're right! The scent of Fresia is wonderful! And I love the story about your French professor with the skirt from Capri!! Thanks so much for sharing all of this ;).
Beth, thank you for adding in your memories of Capri!! How amazing it must have been to see it at just 16... I'm so glad you're going to work more on your Ireland book -- that, too, is a wonderful setting for a novel. And I've never been to Singapore, but I'd heard they have beautiful gardens -- would love to see those someday!! xo
Marilyn! What a lovely post :) I adore bougainvillea! It grows all around the pool at my parent's house and is one of my favorite flowers. I was so excited to see that A Summer in Europe is now sitting in my Kindle waiting for me to read. Can't wait to dig in! Best of luck with your blog tour (which sounds incredible!)
ReplyDeleteMaria,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!! Thanks for getting the book and for *always* being so supportive! You're lucky to live where is warm so you can see bougainvillea all the time -- I'm envious! It is not a flower native to these northern regions... *grin* xox
Marilyn, thank you for stopping by our blog today! Your pictures are gorgeous and I can't wait to read the book! Best--Maggie
ReplyDeleteMaggie, thank you! And I love getting to visit all of you here. ;)
ReplyDeleteI want to travel with your book. Here in California, bougainvilla grows everywhere and sure brightens up the landscape. But it's not the Isle of Capri-cue old song here. :)
ReplyDeletelilhmb@sbcglobal.net
Marilyn,
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by the Stilettos! I can't wait to read the new book and you have now convinced me that I have to find an excuse to go to the Isle of Capri! Now I just have to talk my husband into it:)
lil, I'd love to live in an area where bougainvillea is native to the region. I'm sure it's absolutely gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteJoelle, thank you ;). And, yes!! You, your hubby and the tot definitely need a reason to vacation there! I'm sure it would be a wonderful setting for a humorous mystery...
What a lovely island. You bring it to life. Thank you! And your husband takes great pictures, too. I want to go to Capri and see it for myself.
ReplyDeleteI'm in Wis., and the lilacs and flowering crab apple trees in spring are always lovely. Double lovely, because to me it means spring is officially here.
Don't put me in the for a free book. I read the ARC already, and loved Gwen's story!
I can't wait to read the book. I am always excited to find a new to me author!!! The best of luck.
ReplyDeleteEdie, thank you! I'll tell my hubby that you said so. He's still rather proud of that photograph of the flowers/walking path, and I was always really impressed with it, too! And, yes, the lilacs and crab apple trees ARE beautiful -- you're so right about them making it feel like springtime to us ;).
ReplyDeleteDixie, thanks so much for the luck and good wishes!! I appreciate them and truly hope you'll enjoy the story!
Congratulations to Jencey! A copy of A SUMMER IN EUROPE by Marilyn Brant is headed your way. Enjoy! And thanks again to Marilyn for such a fun visit! :-)
